Considering all of publicity surrounding the infamous break up of model couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston it’s either really hard or really simple to see a movie tied into the middle of it. But despite my better judgment to think this media invasion of privacy is just a big elaborate ploy to get the public interested in a bad movie, I can’t just can’t believe Hollywood is that phony. The sad but good thing is despite this media shitbomb that keeps tabloids running, a movie was actually completed and guess what…it’s actually good! We need not fear past tragedies like Gigli in which paparazzi snowed us in the actors’ crappy lives more so than how bad their movie was.
So, in saying that, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a good movie. The story is simple and certainly not original but hey it has two of the most gorgeous people in “Tinsel Town” today and that’s all that matters. Well, despite their looks or if they’re having an affair in reality, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie can both act. As the Smiths they play sleek and sexy suburban newlyweds who, regardless of a close relationship, have no earthly clue that both are secretly paid assassins working for separate top secret agencies. The problem is that they are both the best at what they do and sooner or later they’re both assigned to the same mission and end up both botching their target because of it. From there, marital violence like no other ensues.
This movie is so damned fun to watch; not so much for the plot but more because the chemistry between Jolie and Pitt. They are dynamite together, but, despite hearsay, not in a porno type way. When the movie gets down and dirty in a violent sort of way, both don’t hold back anything. Director Doug Liman of Swingers, Go and the Jason Bourne series fame, really gives Mr. & Mrs. Smith a sexy comical taste with a nice dash of unadulterated spousal abuse. War of the Roses doesn’t have anything on the Smiths. Even though I only enjoy Vince Vaughn in small comedic doses, he doesn’t hurt the movie as the comic relief sidekick and adds some good bit parts to the slower scenes.
It’s really hard to poke out any immediate flaws in the movie aside from some of the overdramatic drawn-out gun play in parts. Nothing really brings this movie down though. Now that Pitt has basically played the same character he played in Oceans 11 and Spy Game he needs to go back to more challenging roles he’s done in the past. Don’t get me wrong, he did a good job, but we don’t want another Robert Redford on our hands.
I’m first to admit I’m not the biggest fan of Angelina Jolie. I didn’t like either Tomb Raider movie and believe she’s a bit overrated on the sexual scale (I’m sure I’ll get some objections on that comment), however she was sizzling on the screen as Mrs. Smith. It’s safe to say she was the only one that could play that part correctly opposite Pitt. She worked brilliantly.
I’ll also admit that I almost counted this movie out on the first negative review I heard but I made the right choice by catching this weekend. The film is like True Lies blended up with the Story of Us, but much more fun. Take your special lady out to this one; you’ll both be trading punches with each other by the end of the date.
